Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley School of Law is one of the nation's great centers for legal education, exploring and pushing new intellectual boundaries while tackling urgent, real-world issues. Berkeley Law is also known for its vibrant and engaged community of students and scholars who are committed to providing leadership and making a difference on problems of local, national and global import. The Dean's Office is the nerve center for all Law School administrative and financial functions.

The School of Law Senior Assistant Dean & Chief Administrative Officer is the school's lead senior administrator, responsible for the management and operation of the school and its programs and facilities, including human resources, communications, research centers, finance, facilities, service on faculty committees, and representative of the law school on local and national councils/committees. Also has primary responsibility for managing accreditation processes and organizations, both academic and (legal) professional. Directly supervises numerous managers and subsidiary individual contributors, ranging from directors to assistant deans.

Responsibilities

  • Determines and establishes organizational structures and supervisory relationships.
  • Manages major operations and services of the Law School.
  • Advises the Dean on departmental and division-wide organizational structures involving departments, centers, clinics, and Organized Research Units (ORUs).
  • Advises the Dean and senior managers on controversial situations, customer negotiations, or influencing and persuading other high-level faculty, Executive Directors, and senior managers.
  • Develops strategies and recommendations to successfully address and resolve complex issues and conflicts.
  • Manages, prepares, administers, and directs school-wide programs and initiatives as directed by the Dean.
  • Responsible for accreditation relationships and reporting with national law organizations: American Bar Association and Association of American Law Schools.
  • Plans, designs, influences and implements school-wide processes and procedures to contribute to the mission and strategic direction of the law school and to ensure compliance with University policies and procedures and effective deployment of resource allocations.
  • Makes decisions on administrative or operational matters and ensures achievement of operation's objectives (operational and budget processes, academic and/or staff FTE, finance, fundraising, human resources, IT, media & communications, building operations, and space planning).
  • Oversees and manages the Dean's Office and ensures the smooth implementation of the initiatives established by the Dean.
  • Participates in the school's disaster planning and business resumption planning for academic and operating activities.
  • Instills strong management practices among subordinate managers.
  • Manages the employment, selection, training, development, performance evaluation, counseling, and discipline of assigned managers and staff employees.
  • Ensures subordinate managers effectively adhere to and accurately interpret policies and bargaining agreements, and integrate best practices to ensure peak organizational effectiveness.
  • Participates with other higher-level managers to establish the Law School's strategic plans and objectives.
  • As a member of the senior administrative staff, serves as a key contributor in decisions affecting short- and long-range planning.
  • Develops and implements key strategies to engage the school in ways that contribute to the school's mission and strategic direction.
  • Makes recommendations for organizational change and restructuring, including guidelines for implementation and evaluation.
  • Represents the Law School in campus-wide and systemwide meetings and discussions, and conveys critical information and initiatives to the Dean and senior managers.
  • Ensures the dissemination of critical communication on matters of importance.
  • Participates in national law school advisory groups, conferences, and symposia.


Required Qualifications

  • Excellent leadership abilities to oversee multiple functions and departments through subordinate managers.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, human resources and risk management planning, and accounting and payroll.
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive and discrete situations.
  • Skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Strong skills in establishing and implementing service standards.
  • Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals which measure effectiveness of contributions to efficient operations of department.
  • Strong knowledge of common law school-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Advanced project management skills, including the capability to manage capital projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative management theory and ability to translate this knowledge into practice.
  • Advanced skills in strategy development, systems planning and change management.
  • Advanced knowledge of legal accreditation systems, organizations and regular required reporting
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), and ability to apply and integrate core concepts of DEIB into everyday practice.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor or LL.M. degree and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $218,900.00 - $268,000.00.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for up to 20% remote capability.
