The Centre for Maritime Law (CML) at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, launched on 3 September 2015, focuses broadly on international trade, transport and shipping law related issues. It produces research and hosts events of scholarly value to academics, professionals, and government institutions with the objective of enhancing the development of commercial maritime law in Singapore, the region, and further afield.

The Director of CML is Professor Stephen Girvin, MPA Professor of Maritime Law, and the Deputy-Director is Associate Professor Paul Myburgh.

CML is inviting applications from well-qualified candidates in the field of maritime law, who are at an early stage in their professional careers, to conduct research and to participate in the work of CML. Applicants for the position of Senior Research Fellow should have a PhD degree in maritime law and a minimum of three years post-doctoral experience.

The position(s) will carry the following benefits:

1. Employment on a full-time contract at NUS Law for one year, renewable for a second year, subject to satisfactory performance.

2. A remuneration package, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

3. Eligibility to apply for research and conference fund allowances from CML to support attendance at academic conferences and to conduct field research, where required.

4. Allocation of designated workspace within CML.


The duties associated with the position(s) are as follows:

1. The successful applicant will be expected to be in residence throughout the term of his or her appointment, subject to the usual NUS terms as to annual leave.

2. The successful applicant will be expected to have an established research agenda, undertaking research projects on maritime law, leading to publication during his or her term of appointment. This research may include, but is not limited to, the writing of articles for publication in refereed journals, contributions to book chapters in edited collections, a sole-authored book, AND writing working papers for publication in the CML Working Paper Series (

3. The successful candidate will also be required to present his or her research and to participate in and contribute to CML seminars.

4. The successful candidate will be expected to assist in CML’s research projects and initiatives, including the CML CMI Database, Judicial Decisions on International Conventions (, as assigned by the Director of CML.

5. The successful candidate may be expected to perform work of an editorial nature, including (i) helping with the substantive content of CML events and assisting with publications associated with events; (ii) producing CML working papers and reports, including managing manuscripts, liaising with authors, ensuring compliance with house style, and doing basic editing.


The selection committee will consider the following criteria in making an appointment for the position of Senior Research Fellow in CML:

1. The candidate will be of exceptional calibre and have a PhD degree in maritime law, a minimum of three years post-doctoral experience, and a published research output commensurate with this level of expertise.

2. Applications are sought from those with interests in any branch of commercial maritime or shipping law or admiralty law or marine insurance law, including the international sale of goods carried by sea, maritime conflict of laws, maritime dispute resolution, and offshore oil and gas law. (Applications are not, however, sought from those whose primary interests fall within the international law of the sea, ocean law and policy, or international environmental law because these areas fall within the remit of the Centre for International Law (CIL), and the Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (APCEL) in the Faculty of Law.)

3. The principal selection criterion will be the applicant’s potential for excellence in research and a demonstrated ability and passion in assisting in the ongoing development of CML. The applicant should therefore submit a proposed research plan for consideration. The selection committee will consider the alignment of the proposed research with CML’s research strengths and priorities.

4. The applicant should be exceptionally organized. A strong command of the English language is absolutely essential.

A detailed research proposal outlining the research plans for the next year, including the expected outputs of the research during the year, should be submitted.
