This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

In accordance with the Temporary Librarian, Administrative and Professional Staff (TLAPO) Agreement, this position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and an annual salary range of $63,090 to $105,189. This position has an initial appointment of two years.

Location - Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Working for the Department/Faculty

Founded in 1912, the Faculty of Law is the oldest law school in Western Canada. Faculty members of the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law are recognized nationally and internationally as leading scholars and teachers, and lead by example in their service to the university, legal and civic communities. The Faculty enrolls approximately 525 Juris Doctor students and operates a robust graduate program. The Faculty of Law is also home to four research groups that contribute research, ideas, innovation and policy expertise to important areas of public concern: the WahkohtowinThis Law Governance Lodge, Health Law Institute, Centre for Constitutional Studies, and Alberta Law Reform Institute.

Position

Working with the Dean and Law faculty members, as well as external stakeholders, the Experiential Learning Team Lead is a new position in the Faculty of Law responsible for developing additional experiential learning courses, internships and programs, and exploring the possibility of a University of Alberta Law Clinic. This position will contribute to the strategic direction in Law and the University by managing, developing and leading the Experiential Learning Program in the Faculty of Law. The Team Lead will provide administrative support for, and streamlining of, the existing Experiential Learning Program while working to grow the faculty's experiential learning offering with the aim that all law students have an opportunity to undertake at least one experiential learning course for academic credit in their Juris Doctor program.

Duties

Program Management

  • Oversee all aspects of the Experiential Learning Program in the Faculty of Law, including curriculum and program development and community partnerships.
  • Collaboratively plan for the expansion of the Experiential Learning Program with the goal of all law students having an opportunity to undertake at least one experiential learning course for academic credit.
  • Provide strategic vision and leadership to ensure the continued growth and success of the Experiential Learning Program.
  • Participate in ongoing program evaluation and planning
  • Teach clinical courses, providing students with hands-on experience in legal practice under the supervision of legal practitioners.
  • Explore the possibility of a University of Alberta Law clinic to provide hands-on experience to law students and services to clients.


Engagement and Communication

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with University and external stakeholders in support of experiential learning.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with legal practitioners, community organizations, and other stakeholders to facilitate experiential learning placements and collaborative projects.
  • Represent the Faculty of Law in external forums and advocate for the importance of experiential learning in legal training and professional development.
  • Promote awareness of the Faculty of Law's Experiential Learning Program and its impact within the university and broader legal community.


Professional Development

  • Participate in professional development activities, including conferences and workshops relevant to experiential learning.
  • Stay current with developments in legal education, experiential learning pedagogy, and professional standards relevant to clinical practice.


Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree
  • Experience in legal practice and/or clinical teaching experience
  • Existing relationships with the legal community in Edmonton
  • Demonstrated commitment to an inspiring, welcoming, and dynamic learning environment for students
  • Excellent interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with other law school faculty and staff and with external partners
  • Willingness to contribute actively to the strategic vision of the Faculty of Law and the University of Alberta
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing and convey clear, well-articulated information
  • Ability to communicate with the public (including a variety of professional and community stakeholders) to maintain a professional representation of the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to contribute to a team environment
  • Ability to show respect to their colleagues and to work in a collegial manner
  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
  • Experience working with community legal organizations would be an asset
