Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the following table(s) for the current salary scale(s) for this position: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2024-25/july-2024-scales/t24-b.pdf. The current base salary range for this position is $53,100 - $90,000. "Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: Summer 2024

Position duration: One-year term position, with possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability.

Position description

The Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality & Anti-Discrimination Law (the Center) is seeking to hire a Judy Heumann Postgraduate Fellow in Comparative Disability Rights Law.

The Center is a group of over 1000 academics, advocates, and activists from six continents and multiple disciplines committed to the study and enforcement of anti-discrimination law. We seek cross-border collaborations to increase understanding at a global level of how nations and legal systems address the problems of inequality and discrimination. We are committed to mentoring the next generation of equality advocates, scholars, and activists. The Center is based at the UC Berkeley School of Law, which benefits from one of the leading international and comparative law programs in the nation.

Building on UC Berkeley's history of and commitment to research and public service, the Center leverages the intellectual resources of Berkeley faculty and students in furtherance of applied research in a variety of comparative equality and anti-discrimination law and policy areas. Under the supervision of Professor David Oppenheimer, the candidate in this role will assist in conducting legal research on disability rights law, policy and general research in support of the programs undertaken by the disability rights working group.

Our Disability Rights Working Group (DRWG) is committed to constantly interrogating our understanding and responses to issues impacting the lives of people with disabilities. The DRWG hosts activities that provide greater awareness of these issues and foster disability equality. The group's leaders are Professor Laverne Jacobs of the University of Windsor, Ontario, Professor Lisa Waddington of Maastricht University, and PhD candidate Marie Spinoy of KU Leuven.

The fellow will work on:

  • Developing an online presentation on the Global Movement for Disability Rights
  • Possibly helping to edit a collection of essays on The Global Movement for Disability Rights
  • Organizing webinars
  • Organizing panel discussions at the Center's annual conference
  • Possibly organizing a conference at Berkeley Law
  • Producing an annual report to members
  • Assisting in the production of policy papers
  • Assisting with the planning and execution of conferences and CLE programs in the field of equality law
  • Assist in conducting legal research on disability rights law, policy and general research in support of the programs undertaken by the disability rights working group
  • Expanding the center's virtual on-demand library of continuing legal education programs
  • Fundraising/development for the Center's disability rights and other equality work
  • Other projects as needed


The fellow will work closely with:

  • The Center director
  • The leaders of our Disability Rights Working Group
  • Center members working on disability rights litigation, scholarship, and public education projects
  • Berkeley Law students working with the Center director
  • Berkeley undergraduate students working on disability rights projects
  • Faculty from other law schools co-teaching in our multi-university Zoom course on comparative equality law
  • Law students and faculty from partner law clinics from outside the United States.


The exact responsibilities will vary based on the evolution of various initiatives, the expertise and experience of the selected research fellow, and the ongoing evolution of the field. This position is in Berkeley, California with the possibility of a hybrid schedule split between in-person and remote work.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Candidate must hold a Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree or enrolled in a bachelor's degree program (or international equivalent) program at the time of application.


Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • Candidate must hold a Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree by the start date.


Preferred qualifications

  • Masters in Public Policy or J.D. Degree
  • Experience with advocating for people with disability
