Job Description:

DEAN, SCHOOL OF LAW

Tulane University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Law.

Tulane Law School is a top-tier nationally and internationally renowned law school. It has a strong and pervasive international and comparative focus, taking advantage of its location in New Orleans, a hub of international trade and culture. The Law School also has well-established specialty programs in Maritime Law, Environmental Law, Civil Law, Sports Law, International and Comparative Law and European Legal Studies, as well as a burgeoning specialty in Intellectual Property Law.

The new Dean will build on the Law School’s strong foundation and national reputation for scholarship and excellence in legal education.

The Dean will be expected to provide innovative leadership to the Law School in all aspects of its operation, including academic affairs, administration and planning, student and faculty recruitment, financial management, fund raising, alumni and community outreach and institutional advancement.

The University seeks a leader who has strong scholarly and pedagogical skills, as well as a track record of bold, visionary and strategic thinking and leadership.

Tulane University Law School offered its first classes in December 1847, making it the 12th-oldest law school in the United States. It became a member of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) in 1911 and received American Bar Association (ABA) approval in 1925. One of the first chapters of the Order of the Coif was awarded to the Law School in 1936.

Since 1994, the Law School has been housed in Weinmann Hall, a building of some 160,000 square feet, comprising 23 classroom/study/consultation rooms, 67 offices for Faculty and Aadministrators and 55 other offices for professionals, Staff and student organizations.

The Law School collaborates with other Faculties of the University to offer the following joint degrees: J.D./MBA, J.D./M.Acct. (Master of Accounting), J.D./MHA (Master of Health Administration), J.D./MPH in Environmental Health Sciences, LL.M. in Energy and Environment/MPH in Environmental Health Sciences, J.D./MSW (Master of Social Work), J.D./M.A. in Latin American Studies and J.D./M.S. in International Development.

In 2009, the Law School enrolled 775 J.D. and 55 LL.M./S.J.D. Students, from 48 states and 19 countries; 20% are students of color and 84% are from out of state. The median 2009 LSAT score was 162. As of January 1, 2010, there will be 37 full-time Faculty Members, a significant majority of whom (86%) have tenure.

The Law Faculty is an active community of educators, research scholars and practitioners, of national and international prominence.

The Law School has a proud history of commitment to Public Interest Law and community service. It was the first law school in the country to make community service a graduation requirement for J.D. students. It houses six clinical programs, in Civil Litigation, Priminal Defense, Juvenile Justice Representation, Domestic Violence, Environmental Law and Legislative and Administrative Advocacy. The Law School’s range of activities in, and support for, Public Interest is extensive and intensive.

While nominations of lawyers outside the academic arena are welcome, the expectation is that each candidate should be eligible for appointment as a Full Professor with tenure and should have a strong record of effective, collaborative law school leadership or a record of distinction in government service or as a judge or legal practitioner.

Salary and benefits are competitive and negotiable.
