The University of San Francisco School of Law invites applications for the position of Director of the Dorraine Zief Law Library. Founded in 1912, the law school is fully accredited by the ABA and is a member of the AALS. The law school offers both a J.D. degree and a concurrent JD/MBA degree program. USF also offers LL.M degrees in International and Comparative Law and in Intellectual Property and Technology Law. The Dorraine Zief Law Library supports the research needs of the students, faculty, and alumni of The University of San Francisco School of Law and of the University, as well as members of the State Bar of California. It is part of a modern, technologically advanced 60,000 square foot building featuring a comfortable, flexible, fully accessible research and study environment with 394 open seats and additional group study rooms. The Library currently contains over 180,000 print, digital, and microform titles, in more than 350,000 volumes ? including the equivalent of 207,000 volumes in microform.
Currently, the Library's staff consists of 7 full-time librarian positions and 6 full-time support staff positions. Full-time reference librarians hold both a law degree and a library science degree.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
The Director aligns library services with the law school's curriculum, ongoing initiatives and the community's research needs. Additionally, the Director actively participates in the intellectual life of the law school, engaging in scholarly activities and teaching as needed and as time permits. In particular, the Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of library operation and administration, including: strategic planning; hiring, training, and supervising library staff; collection development; budgeting; and developing and implementing technology to support library services. The Director is responsible for ensuring that the library meets the accreditation standards of the American Bar Association as they relate to law libraries and the membership requirements of the Association of American Law Schools. The Director is encouraged to participate in the American Association of Law Libraries and other law library and professional organizations. The Director also works collaboratively with the University Library and the University Library Dean.
The Director reports to the Dean. The School of Law is committed to providing the Director with job security and academic freedom, and, depending on qualifications and interest, the Director may be considered for a faculty position.
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have:
- a JD from an ABA-accredited law school and an MLS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited graduate program.
- a substantial and consistent record of innovation, leadership, and strategic vision, preferably within an academic law library setting.
The successful candidate must also:
- Display a strong commitment to the law school's institutional mission, objectives and needs as well as a strong commitment to faculty and student research and scholarship and to serving a diverse and vibrant user community.
- Build successful and strong relationships with the law school's faculty, students, and staff.
- Encourage and promote teamwork and communication with both internal and external constituencies, emphasizing flexibility and collaboration.
- Demonstrate a commitment to involving staff in addressing problems and solutions, and be able to foster a sense of investment and ownership in the library's mission and challenges.
- Value professional development and facilitate and encourage the law library's staff continued professional development.
- Nurture and build the relationship with the University generally and the University's library
