Job Description:

Dean -- Faculty of Law

"Although it is important to understand the technical aspects of the law, it is equally critical to see law in its complex social context and, thereby, gain an appreciation of the law as a vehicle for the pursuit of social as well as legal justice." -- Dean of Law, Bruce P. Elman.

With the current Dean completing his term June 30, 2010, the University of Windsor, Faculty of Law, is seeking a successor who will continue its 40 year tradition of innovative and groundbreaking programs.

With over 600 students, 32 Faculty Members and 5,500 alumni, Windsor Law has earned a reputation for excellence in teaching, research and social justice. Its Professors have produced leading edge research on issues that matter to Canadians -- issues as diverse as racial profiling, liability for problem gambling and trade within the Americas.

A comprehensive curriculum, combined with experiential learning, is at the heart of Windsor Law. Students may participate in a variety of clinical and outreach programs, including two legal aid clinics, a mediation clinic, the Intellectual Property Law Information Network and the Law Enforcement Accountability Project.

In addition to the LL.B. program, Windsor Law offers other unique and exciting options. With its proximity to the United States, Windsor Law has forged a joint J.D./LL.B. degree with the University of Detroit Mercy, allowing students to seamlessly earn credentials to practise on both sides of the border. Windsor Law students may pursue combined LL.B./M.S.W. and LL.B./M.B.A. degrees with the School of Social Work and the Odette School of Business. Graduates go on to careers in every facet of law and legal practice.

A distinguished academic, the new Dean will continue to expand on the Faculty’s themes of Access to Justice and Transnational Law, while providing professional direction and collegial leadership. A member of the University’s senior management team, the Dean of Law will have experience in academic administration, will be a visible and vocal champion of the institution and the Faculty and will be active in raising their profile and increasing support for their continued expansion.

With 16,000 full- and part-time students in 140 programs, the University of Windsor is a widely respected academic institution and a major contributor to the transformation of its city and region. The University has a broad diversity of students and Faculty and fosters an environment of close co-operation and excellence across its Faculties, to encourage lifelong learning, teaching, research and discovery.

The Search Committee’s consideration of candidates will begin in early December.

In order to ensure consideration, applications and names of references should be submitted by November 30th, to:
