The Centre for Constitutional Studies is recruiting for a dynamic, creative Executive Director.
As the Centre moves towards its 30th anniversary, the Executive Director will have the skills and initiative to:
1) maintain the Centre’s outstanding reputation for producing high quality, timely and thought-provoking resources for academic and public audiences; 2) advance the Centre’s research agenda and activities; 3) oversee the Centre’s commitment to public legal education; and, 4) position and showcase the Centre as a leading interdisciplinary research centre.
The Executive Director reports to the Chair of the Centre’s Board and supervises two Full-time Staff; the Centre also employs several Part-time Student Researchers.
Key responsibilities include:
•Overall management of the Centre, including supervision of two Full-time Staff and several Part-time Student Research/Editorial Assistants
•Preparation of funding proposals, as well as regular reporting to the Centre’s funders
•Supervision of the preparation of the Centre’s financial reports and budget
•Decision-making regarding the use of the Centre’s resources, in collaboration with the Board
•Primary editorship of Review of Constitutional Studies/Revue d’études Constitutionnelles and Constitutional Forum Constitutionnel
•Oversight of the Centre’s Public Legal Education Programming
•Promotion of the Centre to the public, media, legal community and University
•Planning and coordination of events (speakers, conferences, etc.)
•Consultation and collaboration with other organizations, in and out of the province, that have related interests and mandates
•Participation, with the Board and staff, in carrying out the Centre’s strategic plan
•Other duties, as assigned by the Board
The successful candidate will have:
•A Graduate Degree in a relevant field
•Experience in research, teaching, legal practice or other work, directly related to constitutional issues
•Proven leadership skills in developing, planning and managing projects and programs
•Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications skills, including considerable facility with public speaking
•Superior interpersonal skills
•Knowledge about and comfort with working in a university setting
•Experience writing grant applications and managing grant-funded projects
As well, French-language competence, experience in staff supervision and experience working with non-profit governing boards, are definite preferences.
The Centre is recognized for its important contributions, since 1987, to the study of local, national and international constitutional matters. Along with producing extensive public legal education materials and programming, the Centre hosts speakers, conferences and visiting scholars; publishes two journals; supports research projects; and, is a resource for information on constitutional issues.
The Centre is located in the Faculty of Law on the University of Alberta campus.

This trust funded Executive Director position is governed by the Trust/Research Academic Agreement and is expected to commence as soon as possible, but no later than January 1, 2010.
The position is full-time and offers a comprehensive benefits package and a competitive annual salary of $72,438 - 90,550 which will be commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.
