An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Research Fellow to become an integral member of the research team on the UTS Indigenous Knowledge Forum project:

Garuwanga: Forming a Competent Authority to protect Indigenous knowledge

Detailed Description

This project has successfully attracted ARC Linkage funding to work with four Aboriginal Communities from the Kimberley in WA to the Southern Highlands and South Coast NSW to identify, evaluate and recommend an appropriate Competent Authority legal structure so Australia can meet the requirements of the Nagoya Protocol. This Protocol calls for a Competent Authority to govern and administer a legal framework that ensures Indigenous communities’ informed consent is obtained for access to their traditional knowledge, and that establishes fair and equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms for use of that knowledge.

Chief Investigators, Professor Natalie Stoianoff (UTS), Associate Professor Fiona Martin (UNSW) and Professor Andrew Mowbray (Austlii UTS) joined by Partner Investigators Auntie Fran Bodkin, Uncle Gavin Andrews, Dr Virginia Marshall and Dr Anne Poelina, will work with Indigenous Australian communities to address concerns over the form, independence and funding of the Authority to ensure a grass roots approach to the development of an Indigenous governance framework providing transparency and accountability.

Main tasks of the role include:
• Complete and deliver project tasks in accordance with Garuwanga Project Plan including preparing minutes and associated documents for all meetings
• Manage and reconcile budget and financial statements for the project
• Organise research project meetings including catering and travel arrangements for Partner Investigators
• Organise research field trips to Indigenous communities in South Coast NSW and the Kimberley in WA including all travel arrangements for team members, prepare information sheets and consent forms, and record/take minutes of each of the consultations.
• Manage the Indigenous Knowledge Forum website

Main skills and knowledge required for the role include:
• Demonstrated capacity to work independently
• Skills in legal research methods with experience in Indigenous research methodologies highly desirable
• Project management skills
• Ability to work in a team
• Strong oral and written communication skills including skills in academic writing
• Ability to analyse and solve problems
• Experience in website management using content management systems such as Wix
• Doctoral qualifications in Law (PhD) or in a related field.
• Knowledge of corporations law (required)
• Knowledge of environmental law, intellectual property and Indigenous law highly desirable [but not required].

Remuneration/Salary

Base Salary Range: $97,406 to $115,486 pro-rata at 0.5 FTE (Level B)

This role attracts 9.5% superannuation in addition to the base salary. Employee benefits include flexible work practices, child care centres, generous parental leave and salary packaging opportunities.

This appointment will be on a part time (0.5 FTE) fixed term basis for 12 months with the role due to commence in late January 2018.
