The Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba invites applications from legal scholars for a full-time tenure-track or tenured position at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor. Applicants seeking an appointment above the rank of assistant professor should contact the Dean of Law prior to application. The Faculty of Law is at the forefront of legal education in Canada and is housed in one of Canada’s top research universities. It is western Canada’s oldest law school. The city of Winnipeg is culturally rich, steeped in the arts, diverse, and has long-standing and deep connections with Indigenous Nations.
The Faculty welcomes applications from all candidates with demonstrated excellence or a potential for excellence in teaching and research. We especially invite applications from those with interests principally in Criminal Law, Evidence Law, and Human Rights Law. The successful candidate will have the expertise or willingness to teach a mandatory Criminal Law or Evidence law class.
The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, and pedagogical development.
Areas of teaching and research interest
The Faculty is interested in scholars with either a demonstrated or developing research program in criminal law, evidence law, and/or human rights law. These areas will be of primary interest to the hiring committee. However, scholars with other specialties will also be considered.
The successful applicant will develop a focused research program preferably intersecting with or complementing their teaching duties. The position is expected to commence on July 1, 2024, or on a date mutually agreed upon. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Responsibilities may include the ability to:
- Conduct research in the areas articulated above;
- Teach in the core of the JD curriculum;
- Teach elective courses related to the areas articulated above;
- Supervise and advise graduate students’ research;
- Engage in service work in the Faculty, University, or broader practice/professional community; and
- Contribute to a collegial work environment where equity, diversity, inclusion, freedom of inquiry, respectful environment, and Indigenous legal traditions/orders are valued
Qualifications
The successful applicant will have:
- an LL.B. or J.D.;
- an LL.M. (or cognate graduate degree); and
- a PhD or doctoral equivalent in law or cognate discipline (completed or in progress). Demonstrated excellence in teaching and research may be considered in lieu of doctoral studies.
A strong commitment to teach in the first year program is essential.

- Ability to effectively communicate with adult learners;
- Ability to instruct in the areas described above or alternatively other related areas that make key contributions to the Law School;
- Ability to incorporate the Calls to Action in teaching or developing courses;
- Ability to work in a collegial environment with Administration, Instructors, Professors and Support Staff; and
- Potential to contribute to administrative and committee work in an academic environment including curricular proposals and work pertaining to academic innovation.

- a curriculum vitae;
- a research statement (maximum 750 words);
- a statement of teaching philosophy (maximum 500 words);
- where applicable, evidence of teaching achievement, which may include course evaluations or testimonials;
- evidence of research excellence or potential, including where available, sample publications or written work;
- an equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) statement (maximum 500 words), which provides an opportunity for a candidate to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in research and education through advancement of equity, diversity, and inclusion;
- copies of official transcripts from your JD, other degrees, graduate degrees/certificates, and any other relevant credentials; and
- three reference letters, including at least two from an academic institution, sent directly to lawdean@umanitoba.ca by the referee.
