Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley's School of Law is one of the nation's great centers for legal education, ever exploring and pushing new intellectual boundaries while tackling urgent, real-world issues. Currently ranked among the top law schools in the country, the School of Law has ambitious development goals as it looks to continue producing leaders in law, government, and society.

Reporting to the Executive Director for Communications, the Creative Lead will lead art direction and design efforts for every element of the Berkeley Law brand experience, including print, experiential, environmental, web, video, social, email, and advertising. The Creative Lead will conduct ongoing audience research and create smart, engaging digital and print work that translates institutional and departmental objectives into clear creative strategies and designs. Beyond the day-to-day, the Creative Lead will work with the Communications team to generate fresh ideas, create a compelling visual vocabulary, and elevate branding opportunities that will have an impact on future Berkeley Law initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Translate departmental objectives into clear creative strategies, including designs for print and the web.
  • Consult with faculty, centers, clinics, and student organizations to plan and design presentation of visual information effectively and appropriate to target audiences and to the selected visual medium; products may include reports, brochures, publications, presentation slides, proposals, web pages, infographics, event flyers, and other visual communications.
  • Codify the Berkeley Law brand, provide guidance, and foster an internal culture that multiplies our community's wide-ranging intelligence and capabilities.
  • Develop and produce visual presentations that enhance the experience of being at Berkeley Law.
  • Lead ongoing audience research and focus groups with target audiences and use learnings to refine and evolve the Berkeley Law brand.
  • Using advanced understanding of printing and other production processes and of computer software for publishing, images, web sites, and
  • Effectively meet budget and time constraints.
  • Conduct ongoing Berkeley Law brand training and governance sessions for staff to provide inspiration, build design competency and ensure adherence.


Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of design and communications concepts and software applications including Keynote, Google Suite, Powerpoint, and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator, Premiere, and Animate).
  • Advanced knowledge of production processes for print and digital, including environmental signage, and knowledge of vendor requirements for these projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of the campus, including its vision, mission, goals, and objectives or the ability to learn.
  • Advanced design, creative and artistic skills.
  • Advanced skills to devise broad design ideas, present them to clients, and produce results on time and within budget.
  • Advanced interpersonal communications skills, including active listening skills and skills to work effectively within teams and to effectively provide advanced design advice and consultation to clients on all aspects of visual communications.
  • Advanced written and verbal communications skills, with strong attention to detail, to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Critical thinking skills, advanced organizational skills and proactive problem-solving/problem resolution skills.
  • Advanced project management and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to prioritize, exercise initiative and sound judgement, while effectively executing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to lead and mentor others in the department.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with the ability to learn new systems.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and creative tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite.


Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Marketing, Communication and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Extensive experience working in creative design.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an academic institution.


Benefits

The annual salary range of the position is $86,000.00-$94,000.00, commensurate with experience.
