Executive Director - Center for Law, Energy & the Environment - School of Law

The Center for Law, Energy & the Environment is seeking to hire an Executive Director to lead the Center.

The Center for Law, Energy & the Environment (CLEE) is based at the UC Berkeley School of Law, which benefits from one of the leading environmental law programs in the nation. Building on UC Berkeley's history of and commitment to research and public service, CLEE leverages the intellectual resources of Berkeley faculty and students in furtherance of applied research in a variety of environmental and energy law and related policy areas. CLEE's research priorities include combating climate change, advancing sustainable energy, addressing water allocation and management challenges, and sustaining healthy oceans, among other pressing environmental and energy challenges. In addition to CLEE's programs covering climate, oceans, land use, and water, it is also home to the Wheeler Water Institute, the California-China Climate Institute, GrizzlyCorps, Project Climate, and the Climate Risk Initiative. CLEE also serves as the student-facing hub of the environmental and energy law program at Berkeley Law.

The Executive Director is a full-time employee dedicated to the strategic planning, coordination, and management of the Center's research and education initiatives, law school environmental law programming, research in the fields of climate, water, energy, oceans, land use, and environmental governance, as well as the overall operation of the Center. With the support of a full-time program administrator and support staff, and in coordination with CLEE's supervising faculty, staff, and advisory board, the Executive Director plays a central role in developing the vision and strategic direction for the Center, overseeing the portfolio of research projects across programs, managing the Center's team, coordinating law school environmental law programming, and handling administration and operations. In partnership with the Center's Director of Advancement, the Executive Director will oversee fundraising efforts to raise significant income through philanthropic gifts and will create and manage revenue generating agreements with organizational and individual partners.

This position requires strategic thinking and significant leadership and managerial skills; ability to coordinate and leverage diverse stakeholders; and expertise in environmental and energy issues and policy. The Executive Director plays a key role in fundraising; communications; fiscal management; personnel matters; student, faculty and alumni engagement; and curricular program development for the Center.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Establish strategic and organizational goals, objectives, and operational plans in collaboration with faculty, staff, and advisory board
  • Coordinate with faculty director(s), staff, and advisory board on the organization's progress toward its goals
  • Effectively represent CLEE to the public and to other organizational stakeholders
  • Foster a culture that encourages collaboration and individual growth
  • Organize and motivate team leaders to strategically grow impact, programs, and fundraising, and to effectively fulfill CLEE's mission
  • Ensure that the Center's work incorporate principles of participation, diversity, and equity.

Management
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and ensure successful long-term operations
  • Foster a collaborative working environment, encourage professional development, and champion accountability amongst staff
  • Plan, manage, and oversee programs and operations
  • Advocate for the Center among research units and with UCB leadership and media relations; liaise with academic centers in the Law School, and other UCB departments and programs
  • Ensure that CLEE makes consistent and timely progress in achieving its mission and target impact
  • Ensure effective coordination with law school and campus administrative staff and compliance with applicable university regulations.
  • Oversee the Center's student-facing activities.
  • Oversee financial stewardship for CLEE, including allocation and monitoring of existing restricted and unrestricted funds and general fiscal management and oversight
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, students, staff, advisory board, and the public

External Engagement and Impact
  • Lead, manage, and guide CLEE to achieve increasing impact in its areas of emphasis
  • Ensure financial sustainability by managing all aspects of philanthropic fundraising efforts and partnering closely with the Director of Advancement to cultivate and maintain relationships with new and long-term institutional and individual donors
  • Collaboratively lead the evolution of CLEE's strategic plan and drive its implementation
  • Engage in, and support staff in, effective communication of CLEE's outputs with decision-makers, media, stakeholders, financial supporters, and other external parties.
