The Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba invites applications from Indigenous Scholars (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) for a full-time tenure-track or tenured teaching and research position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, and pedagogical development in the area of Indigenous Legal Orders or Indigenous legal issues while supporting broader legal education goals within the Faculty of Law including the need to Indigenize the legal curriculum. The successful applicant will develop a focused research program dealing with issues of Indigeneity and the law. The position is expected to commence on July 1, 2022, or on a date mutually agreed upon. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Areas of teaching and research interest for the Faculty include Indigenous Law and Legal Orders, Indigenous People and the Law, Indigenous Constitutionalism, Aboriginal Law (s.35), Métis People and the Law, Indigenous Legal Orders and Perspectives, Indigenous Rights, Treaty Law in Manitoba and Canada, International Indigenous Legal Perspectives, Indigenous Economic Reconciliation/Empowerment, Indigenous Clinical Practice or other areas relating to Indigeneity and the Law.
may include the ability to:
- Conduct research in Indigenous perspectives and the law (broadly construed), contributing to knowledge and scholarship in the area (traditional and non-traditional research)
- Teach in the JD core credit courses
- Teach elective courses including Indigenous legal courses, and create new courses in the area of Indigeneity and the law in line with Faculty and candidate interests
- Aid in Indigenizing the curriculum in light of the National Requirement
- Supervise and advise graduate students’ research
- Engage in service work in the Faculty, University or broader practice community
- Be a pivotal member of the Truth and Reconciliation Action Team (comprised of Faculty, Indigenous Bar Members, and the Indigenous Student Support Coordinator)
Normally, applicants will have earned one of the following combinations at minimum:
i) JD (i.e. Juris Doctor) and Masters in Law/Masters in cognate field/equivalent (e.g. MHR or others) with potential for research excellence;
ii) JD/JID (i.e. Juris Indigenarum Doctor or further similar education) with potential for research excellence;
iii) JD and Doctorate (completed or in progress) with potential for research excellence; or
iv) JD with demonstrated research excellence and significant relevant experience.
The candidate will be comfortable joining a Faculty of Law committed to Truth and Reconciliation and the Calls to Action.
Appointment at the appropriate rank (Assistant or Associate Professor) will be commensurate with the degree of education achieved, combined with, where relevant, practice experience of a candidate.
- Potential or demonstrated teaching and research excellence
- Ability to effectively communicate with adult learners
- Ability to instruct in the areas described above or alternatively other related areas that make key contributions to the Law School
- An ability to incorporate the Calls to Action in teaching or developing courses, curriculum or clinical content
- Ability to work in a collegial environment with Administration, Instructors, Professors and Support Staff
- Potential to contribute to administrative and committee work in an academic environment including curricular proposals and work pertaining to academic innovation
