Executive Director - Center for Law and the Workplace School of Law

The Berkeley Center for Law and Work (CLAW) at Berkeley Law seeks applications for the position of Executive Director.

The Center for Law and Workplace encourages and supports the study and practice of the law of work (labor law and employment law). CLAW focuses on developing safe, equitable, inclusive, and fair workplace practices, effective compliance with and enforcement of work law, and efforts to encourage meaningful policy change at the state and federal levels. The Center is an intellectual hub in the area of work law, and is a bridge between Berkeley Law and other University of California institutions, including the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment. CLAW's mission is to bring together practitioners, advocates, academics, and students for speaker series, workshops, and collaborative projects.
The Executive Director (ED) will work with the Faculty Directors, with Berkeley Law students with interest in work law, and with other affiliated faculty and staff of CLAW and Berkeley Law. The ED will oversee administration and research support for the Center. The ED will conduct external outreach, organize and host research colloquia, conduct network development, and engage in strategic planning. The ED will identify, build, nurture and maintain effective relationships with internal and external constituencies and serve as one of the principal advocates for CLAW. Collaboration and coordination with the Berkeley Journal of Employment and Labor Law, the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment, and with other University-based research centers is expected.

Administration of CLAW Programs and Activities
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for coordinating and administering all CLAW programs and activities. These may include, but are not limited to, meeting with and mentoring students, organizing and hosting conferences and special programs, and managing CLAW production of scholarly and policy work on work law topics. For example, CLAW may produce white papers, advise legislatures and regulatory agencies, and increase opportunities for Berkeley Law students to gain hands-on experience in work law and policy.

The ED will play a central role in conceptualizing, planning, and administering conferences and workshops hosted by CLAW. In consultation with the Faculty Directors, the ED will develop new programs and activities relevant to the mission of CLAW, identify prospective speakers for conferences and colloquia, arrange and coordinate the visits to campus of speakers, and serve as the point person for all CLAW activities. The ED will interact and coordinate with other centers, departments, and campus entities in co-sponsoring and developing conferences and workshops of mutual interest, and may represent CLAW at campus meetings or on committees. The ED will also interact with policy makers, work law centers at other universities, and intellectual leaders in the work law area. The ED is responsible for maintaining and improving the CLAW web page, coordinating social media outreach and messaging to reach a broader audience, and publicizing and conducting outreach for CLAW programs.

The ED is responsible for developing and maintaining contacts and networks among Berkeley Law alumni who practice in the work law area. The ED will develop and use these contacts to conduct outreach about CLAW activities with alumni, assist students in finding mentors and potential positions in the work law area, and monitor issues of interest or concern among our work law alumni.

The ED is responsible for developing and maintaining a mailing list (email) for the various constituents of CLAW, including alumni in the work law area, students, the broader campus community engage in labor and employment related research, and faculty. The ED will assist with supporting the professional and scholarly development of students at Berkeley Law with work related interests.

The ED will also play a central role in revenue generation, fundraising and budgeting. The ED will assist the Faculty Directors in identifying and pursuing grant and other revenue opportunities to support the activities of CLAW, and may provide support for grant writing activities for faculty and graduate students affiliated with CLAW. The ED will also conduct outreach to alumni for purposes of programmatic development and fundraising. The ED has responsibility for the oversight of CLAW staff and academic appointees.
