The Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba invites applications from applicants for a full-time term position as an Instructor II or Senior Instructor. The position is expected to commence on January 1, 2023 and end December 27, 2024. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Faculty of Law is a national leader in legal education and is at the leading edge of clinical legal education in Canada and is housed in one of Canada’s top research universities in western Canada’s oldest law school.   

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and pedagogical development in the Law School.  The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the service life of the faculty by contributing to a minimum of 3 unit or university wide committees per service year.  Service in a clinical offering may be performed in lieu of committee service.

Areas of teaching interest

The Faculty seeks candidates who are interested in teaching in the required and recommended curriculum of Manitoba’s only credentialed law school.

The Faculty welcomes applications from persons willing to teach areas in the curriculum including:

  • contract law, property law, trusts, corporations, business law, torts, family law, constitutional law, administrative law, legal systems, legal methods, negotiations, externship seminars, evidence; and/or
  • an ability to contribute to our clinical programs across a range of subjects including the business law clinic, Legal Aid clinics, or rights related clinical experiences

We are also open to candidates able to contribute to our bilingual curriculum, as applicable.

Qualifications

Applicants will have:

  1. a JD (i.e. Juris Doctor) or equivalent; and
  2. a Masters in Law/Masters in cognate field or equivalent legal practice/clinical expertise (bar call and a number of years in practice) in lieu of graduate training

Enrolment or graduation from advanced graduate studies including doctoral programs is an asset.

Candidates should indicate whether they are able to practice law in Manitoba.

Abilities/Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrated teaching excellence or potential;
  • Instructing in some of the areas described above;
  • Openness to incorporating the Calls to Action in teaching, curriculum and/or clinical content;
  • Working in a collegial environment with Administration, Instructors, Professors and Support Staff;
  • Contributing to administrative and committee work;
  • Contributing to a collegial work environment where equity, diversity, inclusion, freedom of inquiry, respectful environment, and Indigenous legal traditions/orders are valued.

  • a statement of teaching philosophy (approximately 500 words);
  • evidence of teaching potential or excellence
  • if relevant, an equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) statement (approximately 300 words) which provides an opportunity for the candidate to demonstrate a commitment to these principles;
  • copies of transcripts from your JD, other degrees and any other relevant credentials; and
  • three named references with contact information and a description of your relationship with the reference
