Application Deadline Open until filled
Position Start Date Aug. 19, 2024
  • Assistant Professor
  • Clinical Training

The University of Memphis School of Law invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Law who will be responsible for designing, directing, and teaching a new in-house clinic.  We welcome enthusiastic candidates with relevant practice experience, outstanding academic and professional accomplishments, a passion for teaching and supervising law students, a demonstrated interest in legal scholarship, and a dedication to experiential education, collaboration, and community.

Memphis Law’s clinics place students in the lead role of providing direct legal services under close faculty supervision.  Our four existing in-house clinics—the Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic, the Neighborhood Preservation Clinic, the Expungement and Restoration of Rights Clinic, and the Mediation Clinic—seize on innovation and community partnerships to train Clinic students to assist individuals, organizations, and neighborhoods throughout our city.  A successful candidate will present a creative vision for a new clinic that will enhance our delivery of experiential education, build upon our existing curriculum, and position students to deliver high-quality legal assistance.  Rather than inviting proposals for a clinic with a subject matter focus or delivery model that we have predetermined, we welcome proposals in areas suggested by the applicant that will maximize educational opportunities for students and that demonstrate potential for strong community collaboration.

The University of Memphis School of Law is housed in a beautifully restored nineteenth-century U.S. Custom House overlooking the Mississippi River.  The Law School has an active and diverse student body, and colleagues committed to excellence in both scholarship and teaching.  The Law School is also a vibrant hub for the legal community in Memphis and the greater Mid-South, hosting countless programs, conferences, and symposia for the bench, bar, and academy.

The City of Memphis has a rich musical heritage and is recognized around the world as the birthplace of the Delta blues, southern gospel, rock and roll, and Memphis hip hop.  Consistently ranked as one of the most affordable cities in the United States, Memphis is a welcoming and thriving community.  Memphis is proud of its friendly atmosphere, charming neighborhoods, revitalized downtown, professional and collegiate sports teams, and world-class attractions such as Graceland, Beale Street, Stax Records, Sun Studios, Memphis Zoo, the National Civil Rights Museum, and nationally recognized theater companies.
