Working for the Department/Faculty

The Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta invites applications for up to three tenure-stream appointments at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin July 1, 2024. The Faculty will also consider applications for appointment at a higher rank in appropriate circumstances.

The Faculty welcomes applications from scholars with diverse perspectives and backgrounds, but is especially interested in applicants whose academic interests focus on private law and business law related areas

Founded in 1912 the Faculty of Law is the oldest law school in Western Canada. It is situated on the North Campus of the University of Alberta, centrally located in Alberta's capital city, a metropolitan center of 1.3 million people. Members of the Faculty of Law are recognized nationally and internationally as leading scholars and teachers, and lead by example in their service to the university, legal and civic communities. The Faculty enrolls approximately 525 JD students and operates a robust graduate program.

The Faculty of Law is also home to four research groups that contribute research, ideas, innovation and policy expertise to important areas of public concern: the Health Law Institute, the Centre for Constitutional Studies, the Alberta Law Reform Institute, and the Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge, which upholds Indigenous Law and governance through community directed research and learning.

Position

Successful candidates must have the ability to conduct research, develop viable and productive research programs, and to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in a related discipline. Successful candidates will also be expected to make substantive contributions through service to the Faculty, the University, and/or to the broader community. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Successful candidates will demonstrate potential for excellence in scholarly research and teaching, and possess a substantial record of academic achievement.

A JD/LLB or equivalent and a doctorate in law or cognate discipline, completed or in progress is required. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Applications should include a curriculum vitae; a maximum 2-page research plan; a maximum two-page teaching summary; names of three confidential referees from whom signed letters of academic reference will be submitted directly; law and graduate transcripts; and a sample publication.
