Assistant Professor/Professor - Native American and Indigenous Law - School of Law


The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure-track Assistant/Full Professor faculty position in the School of Law with an expected start date of July 1, 2020. We welcome applications from scholars writing in Native American and Indigenous Law, including but not limited to Federal Indian Law, as part of a campus-wide cluster hire in Native American and Indigenous Studies.

Over the next three years, UC Berkeley will dedicate six new faculty positions to establish the university as an international center of excellence in Native American and Indigenous Studies. Building upon very substantial existing campus assetsincluding an undergraduate major and graduate program in Native American Studies and strengths in Native American languages and literature, indigenous archaeology and cultural anthropologythe goal is to make UC Berkeley the pre-eminent institution of higher education in the field.

Candidates will be evaluated and must be suitable for appointments in both the Law School and the Department of Ethnic Studies, which houses the Native American Studies (NAS) program. Basic Qualifications:
All candidates must either: a) hold a J.D. degree (or equivalent international degree), b) hold a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent international degree), or c) be enrolled in a Ph.D. or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications:
Candidates who do not hold a J.D. or Ph.D. degree, but who have advanced to candidacy status for a Ph.D. or equivalent international degree, must have the Ph.D. or equivalent international degree conferred by the start date.

Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will:
  • demonstrate evidence of strong research productivity, potential for funding, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and research mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs.
  • demonstrate evidence of outstanding scholarship within a relevant field such as Federal Indian Law, Indigenous Peoples, and/or Native American Studies.
  • demonstrate teaching experience in teaching basic and advanced courses in Federal Indian Law, Indigenous People, and/or Native American Studies.
  • demonstrate a track record of authentic engagement with Native Nations.
  • demonstrate evidence of their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in ways that align with UC Berkeley's mission to meet the educational needs of California's diverse population (see: https://ofew.berkeley.edu/recruitment/contributions-diversity/support-faculty-candidates).
