Salary: Commensurate with experience

This is a two-year, full-time (100%) appointment, subject to renewal.

The Berkeley Center for Consumer Law and Economic Justice (CLEJ) at Berkeley Law seeks applications for the position of full-time Executive Director (Academic Coordinator II) with an anticipated start date of December 1, 2020.

Overview
The Center for Consumer Law and Economic Justice encourages and supports the study, research, and practice of consumer law with an emphasis on economic security, and safe, equal, and fair access to the marketplace, and aims to fuel meaningful policy change at the state and federal levels. The Center serves as an intellectual hub in the area of consumer law, convening the first conference of consumer law scholars in the United States. CLEJ now regularly brings together practitioners, advocates, academics, and students for speaker series, workshops, and collaborative projects.

The Executive Director works with the Faculty Director and other affiliated faculty and staff of CLEJ and Berkeley Law, and has oversight of administrative and research support for the Center. The Executive Director conducts external outreach, hosts research colloquia, conducts network development, and strategic planning. The incumbent will identify, build, nurture and maintain effective relationships with external constituencies and serve as one of the primary or principal advocates for CLEJ. Collaboration with other University-based research centers is expected.

Administration of CLEJ Programs and Activities
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for coordinating and administering all CLEJ programs and activities. These may include, but are not limited to, meeting with students, hosting and attending conferences and special programs, and managing CLEJ production of scholarly and policy work on consumer law topics. For example, CLEJ produces white papers, files amicus briefs in consumer law cases nationwide, advises legislatures and regulatory agencies on behalf of low-income consumers, and increases opportunities for Berkeley Law students to gain hands-on experience in consumer law policy.

The ED plays a central role in conceptualizing, planning, and administering conferences and workshops hosted by CLEJ. In consultation with the Faculty Director, the ED develops new programs and activities relevant to the mission of CLEJ, identifies prospective speakers for conferences and colloquia, arranges and coordinates the visits to campus of speakers, and serves as the point person for all CLEJ activities. The ED interacts and coordinates with other centers, departments, and campus entities in co-sponsoring and developing conferences and workshops of mutual interest, and may represent CLEJ at campus meetings or on committees. The ED is responsible for maintaining and improving the CLEJ web page, coordinating social media outreach and messaging to reach a broader audience, and publicizing and conducting outreach for CLEJ programs.

The ED also plays a central role in revenue generation, fundraising and budgeting. The ED assists the Faculty Director in identifying and pursuing grant and other revenue opportunities to support the activities of CLEJ, a well as its faculty affiliates, and may provide support for grant writing activities for faculty and graduate students affiliated with CLEJ. The ED has responsibility for the oversight of CLEJ staff and academic appointees.

Basic Qualifications (required at the time of application):
  • JD degree or equivalent international degree


Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
  • 5+ years of professional experience
  • Admission to The State Bar of California
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience with events, budgets, and grant proposals
  • Excellent written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience in all aspects of U.S. consumer law, including the roles of practitioners and judicial officers, state and federal court rules and procedures, the applicable law, as well as academic research into the current challenges faced by litigants in consumer law matters.
