Clinic Supervising Attorney - Environmental Law Clinic - School of Law


The Berkeley Law Environmental Law Clinic (ELC) seeks applications for a Clinic Supervising Attorney.

ELC provides students with hands-on experience in administrative agency practice, litigation, legislation, and policymaking on behalf of real-world clients, aiming to (1) make students creative and effective environmental lawyers; (2) address the environmental legal needs of underserved communities; (3) make an environmental difference.

Under the supervision of the Clinic Director, a Supervising Attorney's general responsibilities include generating legal matters; training and supervising students in client representation; managing one or more legal cases or projects independently (i.e., without a co-supervisor); mentoring Clinic Teaching Fellows (if applicable); co-teaching the ELC companion seminar; and performing varied administrative and other tasks to assist in ELC's operation.

The law school provides support for Supervising Attorneys to attend conferences that advance their professional development goals and interests. ELC additionally supports other activities that individual staff identify as relevant to their professional satisfaction and growth.


Under the supervision of the Clinic Director, the Supervising Attorney will be responsible for:

Clinic Supervision and Advocacy (80%)
  • Training and supervising six to eight clinic students per semester
  • Developing and managing clinic cases and projects, and responding to case intake queries
  • Attending and assisting in the design and teaching of the weekly clinic seminar
  • Attend weekly ELC team meetings and monthly clinical program meetings
  • Recruiting clinic students and undergraduate mentees through events and other outreach
  • Developing and maintaining clinic relationships with clients, partners, co-counsel, and other stakeholders
  • Traveling to offsite meetings as needed to work on clinic matters (often with students)
  • Managing the clinic docket during summers

Administrative Duties (15%)
  • Assisting with clinic administrative functions, including maintaining a shared document management system and course web site, and interfacing with shared clinical program paralegal on document proofing/cite checking/production/filing
  • Organizing programmatic events, such as conferences, workshops, film, and speaker series
  • Promoting the clinic to students and other constituencies
  • Engaging in media relations and development activities
  • Speaking at public events, and otherwise participating in professional networking, training, and development activities

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
  • Performing other duties as needed, including organization of off-site visits to Clinic project areas in California (typically once per semester).

UC Field Work Supervisors are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.
