The Faculty is seeking outstanding candidates who will contribute actively to the life of the academic community at the University of Manitoba and beyond. The Faculty of Law is committed to fostering an inclusive environment for faculty, students and staff. The main criterion is academic excellence, or a demonstrated potential for excellence, as reflected in the candidate’s experience and scholarly research and teaching record. The successful candidate will exhibit strong potential for, or continuing excellence in, producing innovative and high-quality scholarly research, as well as for delivering outstanding teaching and fostering an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence. The successful candidate will also be required to make substantive contributions through service to the Faculty, to the University, and/or to the broader community. An applicant is required to have a JD/LLB in addition to a graduate degree in either law or a cognate discipline. The Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba has approximately 300 J.D. students, a LL.M. program and an inter-disciplinary Master of Human Rights Program (MHR). It is home to the Centre for Human Rights Research, the Asper Chair in International Business and Trade Law and the Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law. A number of journals are based at the Faculty: the Canadian Journal of Human Rights; the Manitoba Law Journal and Underneath the Golden Boy; and the Asper Review of International Business & Trade Law. The Faculty is integrating opportunities for J.D. students to experience part of their legal education in French. The University of Manitoba, the province’s only research intensive university, has a student population of over 30,000 and is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba’s capital city (population approximately 800,000). Recently recognized by National Geographic Traveler magazine, Winnipeg has all the facilities of a major centre, with the atmosphere of a smaller, friendlier city. It has a rich and diverse cultural environment which reflects the Indigenous, multi-racial and multi-ethnic character of our city: art and cultural galleries including the only Inuit Art Centre in the world, professional sports teams, theatre, symphony, opera and dance, a world-class jazz and live music scene, and many festivals, most notably the Manito Ahbee Festival, le Festival du Voyageur, the Winnipeg Folk Fest, and Folklorama, a festival celebrating the diverse people that make Manitoba home, and offers access to some of the most beautiful lake country and recreational facilities in North America. Excellent private and public schools are available that teach in English, French and other international languages. The University of Manitoba campuses are located on original lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the M├ętis Nation.

Each application must include a cover letter as well as separate statements of current and prospective research interests and teaching experience or potential, and a curriculum vitae. In addition, candidates must include an academic writing sample such as an article or thesis chapter. Candidates with previous academic appointments or experience must include copies of their student course evaluations. Applicants will also arrange to have copies of all academic transcripts and three letters of reference sent directly to the address below. This competition will remain open until filled, however the Search Committee will begin reviewing applications on January 4, 2021.
