Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist - nDEE Research Fellow- School of Law

The Center for Law, Energy & the Environment is seeking to hire a Research Fellow focused on helping develop a network for digital economy, energy, and the environment (nDEE).

The Center for Law, Energy & the Environment (CLEE) is based at the UC Berkeley School of Law, which benefits from one of the leading environmental law programs in the nation. Building on UC Berkeley's history of and commitment to research and public service, CLEE leverages the intellectual resources of Berkeley faculty and students in furtherance of applied research in a variety of environmental and energy law and policy areas. CLEE's research priorities include combating climate change, advancing sustainable energy, addressing water allocation and management challenges, and sustaining healthy oceans, among other pressing environmental and energy challenges.

The Digital Economy Research Fellow will focus on an initiative exploring and supporting multi-disciplinary research to increase understanding of the energy and environmental impacts of the digital economy, with emphasis on sharing platforms, e-commerce, artificial intelligence, blockchain technologies, and/or the internet of things. The primary pillars of the initiative include: soliciting, reviewing, and selecting external research proposals for funding through subawards; growing a research coordination network and undertaking a variety of activities designed to support an emerging field of research, including drafting framing papers, blog posts, and other outputs; and maintaining the project's digital presence, including its website and/or social media functionalities, including content development and maintenance. Other project activities include convening expert workshops, developing research pre-proposals, expanding the project bibliography, managing interns, grad students, and other affiliates, identifying publication opportunities, engaging in outreach with interested parties, media, and academics, and others.

A key component of this position is providing centralized coordination for both the three-institution project team (in addition to CLEE this initiative is led by Yale University and the Environmental Law Institute) and for the ever-expanding network of experts and practitioners in this area. Activities are anticipated to be roughly split between substantive research and drafting of outputs and operational, coordination, and administrative activities. The exact responsibilities will vary based on the evolution of the initiative, the expertise and experience of the selected research fellow, and in response to the ongoing evolution of the field. This position can be located remotely, but travel may occasionally be necessary to or within California, Connecticut, and/or Washington DC.

For more information on CLEE, see; for more information on this initiative, see

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Managing and coordinating project team focused on completing tasks for the nDEE initiative, including running project team meetings and ensuring completion of grant deliverables
  • Conducting outreach to researchers, practitioners, and other experts in the initiative subject area to expand our network
  • Engaging in a variety of activities to support the existing research coordination network
  • Conducting research on the energy and environmental impacts of the digital economy, under the direction of and in collaboration with project team members, affiliates, and other experts in relevant fields
  • Drafting outputs in a variety of possible formats, ranging from framing papers to blog posts to social media posts
  • Assisting the project team (which is spread across three institutions) in organizing and facilitating meetings, workshops, and other convenings with subject matter experts
  • Presenting findings, updates, interim reports, etc. to sponsors, media, and nongovernmental, governmental, academic, and/or stakeholder communities as needed
  • Assisting with other miscellaneous aspects of project activities as appropriate
