Lecturer - Legal Studies Program - School of Law

Berkeley Law is generating an applicant pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in our Legal Studies program should openings arise. Openings are generally part-time.

Legal Studies is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major that engages the meanings, values, practices, and institutions of law and legality. The faculty of Berkeley Law's Jurisprudence and Social Policy Program (JSP) has primary responsibility for the Legal Studies program at UC Berkeley. JSP faculty and other Law faculty teach a curriculum that examines how law shapes, and is shaped by, political, economic, and cultural forces. The major is designed to stimulate critical understanding of and inquiry about the theoretical frameworks, historical dynamics, and cultural embeddedness of law. Please see http://legalstudies.berkeley.edu for details of the curriculum.

General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and maintaining a course website.

Basic qualifications: J.D. degree, Ph.D. degree, equivalent international degree, or enrollment in a Ph.D. (or international equivalent) program at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications: J.D., Ph.D., or equivalent international degree is required by start date. Experience teaching at the postsecondary level is required by start date.

Preferred qualifications: Excellent student evaluation scores as primary instructor of an undergraduate course at an accredited university. Expertise in one or more areas of the legal studies curriculum (I. Crime, Law and Social Control; II. Law and Culture; III. Law and Markets; IV. Law, Rights, and Social Change; V. Law and Sovereignty), and a record of active research and publication in the field of Legal Studies.

Salary: Our starting annual full-time salary is $56,381, prorated according to teaching workload. Credit may be given to prior college-level teaching experience (not including graduate student or summer session teaching).

Application Procedure: To apply, please visit the following link: https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/JPF02642.

To receive full consideration for any openings please submit a complete application. Completed applications will be reviewed when openings arise. Appointments for fall semester are usually reviewed in January; for spring semester in August; and for summer sessions in September. Applicants will only be contacted if openings arise. Additional materials and/or references may be requested of finalists.

The applicant pool will close on June 28, 2021; candidates who are interested in remaining in the pool after that time will need to submit a new application.

Please direct questions to: academicpositions@law.berkeley.edu

Berkeley Law is interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching.
