Post-Doctoral Fellowships AY2018-2019

The Centre for Maritime Law (CML) at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, focuses broadly on international trade, transport and shipping law related issues. It produces research and hosts events of scholarly value to academics, professionals, and government institutions with the objective of enhancing the development of maritime law in Singapore, the region, and further afield. The Centre moved into its own designated research facility in the Faculty of Law during the first quarter of 2017.

The Director of CML is Professor Stephen Girvin and the Deputy-Director is Associate Professor Paul Myburgh.

The Centre now invites applications from suitable candidates in the field of maritime law for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship position commencing in AY2018-2019. The successful applicant will join our existing full-time research staff, Dr Viktor Wéber (Postdoctoral Fellow), and Ms Luci Carey and Mr Elson Ong (Research Associates).

Successful applicants will commence their Fellowships at a date to be arranged and will conclude them one year later. It may be possible, exceptionally, to renew for an additional year.

Benefits

The position(s) will carry the following benefits:

1. Employment on a full-time contract at NUS Law for one year, possibly renewable for a second year, subject to satisfactory performance.

2. A fixed remuneration package of S$78,000. This all-in sum is inclusive of stipends for housing and living expenses.

3. Reimbursement of a return economy class airfare (by the most economical and direct route) up to a maximum of S$2,000 to and from Singapore (for foreign applicants).

4. Eligibility to apply for research and conference fund allowances from CML to support attendance at academic conferences and to conduct field research, where required.

5. Allocation of a lockable workstation within CML.

6. The opportunity to present his or her research in seminars hosted by CML.

Duties

The duties associated with the position(s) are as follows:

1. Subject to the normal NUS terms as to annual leave, Postdoctoral Fellows will be expected to be in residence throughout the term of their appointment and to work within CML on a daily basis.

2. Postdoctoral Fellows will be required to conduct research during the term of their appointment. Such research may include the writing of articles for publication in refereed journals, contributing to book chapters in edited collections, or preparing a monograph or other monograph for publication.

3. Postdoctoral Fellows will be expected to contribute to our cutting-edge CML Working Paper Series, https://law.nus.edu.sg/cml/wps.html.

4. Postdoctoral Fellows will be expected to assist in editing and digesting cases for the database, "Judicial Decisions on International Conventions", https://law.nus.edu.sg/cmlcmidatabase/, hosted by CML in collaboration with the Comité Maritime International (CMI).

5. The successful Postdoctoral Fellow will be required to present his or her research and to participate in and contribute to CML seminars.

6. Postdoctoral Fellows may be expected to assist in the organization of colloquia, seminars, or other events for CML, as assigned by the Director of CML.

The selection committee will consider the following criteria in making an appointment for the position of Post-Doctoral Fellow at CML:

1. The applicant must be of exceptional calibre, having attained a doctoral degree in maritime law which must have been successfully completed and examined during the period 1 May 2016 to 30 April 2018.
