The Rosenberg College of Law at the University of Kentucky invites applications for a full-time, nine-month faculty position to teach in the law school’s Legal Research and Writing program beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. The new faculty member will typically teach two courses per semester in the Legal Research and Writing program (program), including one section of the four-credit legal research and writing (LRW) course for first-year law students (typical section size ranges from 18 to 22 students), and either a second section of the LRW course or an upper-level writing course such as advanced persuasive writing (typical section size is 16), depending on class size and program needs. The new faculty member will work collaboratively with other full-time faculty involved in the program, including a library faculty liaison who teaches the legal research component of the LRW course. In addition to teaching, the new faculty member will maintain regular office hours, evaluate student assignments, and hold individual conferences.

The position offers an initial appointment as Assistant Professor of Legal Research and Writing for a term not to exceed three years. After the initial appointment period, the successful candidate will be eligible for a renewable, five-year appointment. The position is in the clinical title series, and thus is non tenure eligible. The appointment is a nine-month, academic appointment. The new faculty member will be expected to engage in professional activity and service, but the primary distribution of effort is teaching. The new faculty member will receive a Faculty Development Allowance for expenses related to professional development efforts, including travel and registration expenses associated with academic conferences. The new faculty member is also eligible to receive grants for summer research pending available funds. Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience.

Applicants should have a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school, a record of high academic achievement, strong analytical and rhetorical skills, and substantial legal-practice experience that demonstrates the potential for excellence in teaching legal writing and other lawyering skills. Candidates must also possess a commitment to students and to teaching in the legal writing field, which involves significant student interaction and evaluation of students’ written work.
To receive consideration for this position, applicants must apply through the University of Kentucky’s Integrated Employment System at https://ukjobs.uky.edu/postings/412899https://ukjobs.uky.edu/postings/41289…, and must include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae or resume, a writing sample (upload under Specific request 1), and at least three professional references when prompted in the application. Please send any questions about this position to Professor Melissa Henke, Director of Legal Research and Writing, via email at mailto:melissa.henke@uky.edumelissa.henke@uky.edu.
