Position description

The Environmental Law Clinic is a multi-tool advocacy clinic that focuses on environmental health and environmental justice at the local, state, and national level. In our clinic, we train students to be creative problem-solvers by engaging them in a combination of investigation, litigation, legislative drafting, regulatory advocacy, and strategy advising to further our clients' goals.

In our companion seminar, we probe the systemic forces (including racial, economic, and gendered injustices) that shape current environmental laws, and strategize about high-leverage avenues for reform. Additionally, in both clinic projects and seminar, we probe the role of media in framing/reframing narratives to effectuate client goals. This includes training students in writing op eds, and working with clients on media campaigns.

Our current docket addresses radioactivity and chemical contamination at insufficiently remediated military sites; toxic chemicals in consumer products; and increasing uptake of residential clean energy.

DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Clinic Director and in collaboration with any future Deputy Director, the Supervising Attorney will be responsible for:

Clinical Supervision (80%)

• Train and supervise eight Clinic students per semester


• Assist in designing and teaching components of the Clinic seminar


• Manage Clinic client matters and vet new Clinic clients and matters


• Develop and maintain Clinic relationships with clients, strategic partners, co-counsel, and other community stakeholders


• Travel and offsite meetings as needed to represent clients


• Manage the Clinic docket during summers

Clinic Administration (15%)

• Support the development of Clinic policies and training materials


• Take lead on conflict checks process and evaluation of applications for admission to ELC


• Promote the Clinic to students and other constituencies


• Engage in media relations and development, including speaking at public events and with the press


• Participate in professional development, training, and networking activities

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

• Perform other duties as needed

UC Field Work Supervisors are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• J.D. degree, or equivalent international degree

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

• A minimum of 3 years of law practice experience (judicial clerkship may substitute for one year)


• Admission to practice law in California

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with clinical education


• Excellent research, writing, and transactional lawyering skills


• Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and planning skills


• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team


• Ability to develop and manage client projects and transactions independently


• Experience supervising students, junior associates, paralegals, or law clerks
