Professor Dau-Schmidt is a nationally recognized teacher and scholar on the subjects of labor and employment law and the economic analysis of legal problems. Articles on his innovative teaching method using classroom simulations have appeared in the Christian Science Monitor, Chronicle of Higher Education, Sun Times, and the National Jurist, as well as in the Indiana Daily Student. In 1998 the School of Law granted him a Teaching Excellence Recognition Award. In 2003 the School of Law granted him their top teaching prize, the Leon H. Wallace Award. Also in 2003, Indiana University conferred on Professor Dau-Schmidt the prestigious Sylvia Bowman Award for teaching excellence. Professor Dau-Schmidt is the author of three books and numerous articles on labor and employment law and the economic analysis of law. He has presented papers at academic conferences and law schools across the United States and in Canada and Europe. In 1991 he received the Scholarly Paper Award from the Association of American Law Schools for his work on the economic analysis of the criminal law as a preference-shaping policy.
Professor Dau-Schmidt has been active in several national academic associations. He was elected to the National Council of the American Association of University Professors (1993-96) and appointed to serve on the Executive Committee (1994-96) and Litigation Committee (1993-02) of that organization. Professor Dau-Schmidt has served on the Executive Committee of the Association of American Law Schools` section on Labor and Employment Law (1990-91), the Industrial Relations Research Association`s section on Labor and Employment Law (1998-99), and the Labor Law Group (2000-03). He has also served as the chair for the Association of American Law Schools` section on Law and Socio-economics (2002-03) and on that section`s Executive Committee (2000-03). He is also a founder of the Midwest Law and Economics Association.
Professor Dau-Schmidt has also taught at Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel, Germany, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in Erlangen, Germany, and Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) in Paris, France.
